It is placed in a cavity (typically a groove) and seals the gap by its own compression deformation, thereby achieving the sealing between two or more components. Core Function and Working Principle The core function of an O-ring is to create a barrier between two or more components, preventing the leakage of fluids (liquids or gases) from the predetermined passage. Its working principle is based on its elastic deformation: Static Sealing: This is the most classic application of the O-ring. When two components are assembled and fastened (such as flange connection, end cover and cylinder body), the O-ring is pressed into the pre-designed groove. During the installation process, the circular cross-section of the O-ring is compressed and undergoes compressive deformation, thereby generating a very high initial contact stress on the sealing contact surface. This contact stress is sufficient to block the leakage channels of the fluid, thereby achieving sealing. The medium pressure within the system will further compress the O-ring, increasing its contact stress, thus achieving the self-sealing effect (the higher the pressure, the better the sealing). Dynamic Sealing: O-rings can also be used between components that have relative motion, such as the piston rod in reciprocating motion or the hydraulic cylinder. In this case, the O-ring also relies on the contact stress generated by compression deformation to achieve sealing. However, due to the movement, higher requirements are imposed on the material of the O-ring, the design of the groove, the surface finish, and the lubrication to prevent wear and twisting (spiral deformation).
